Lincoln’s letter to his son’s teacher

December 28, 2006 at 1:17 pm (Blogroll)

I found this master piece in my Dad’s book in which he used to write great pieces of poem/literature/ispirational stories since 1956.  This is one of the best.

He will have to learn, I know,
that all men are not just,
all men are not true.
But teach him also that
for every scoundrel there is a hero;
that for every selfish Politician,
there is a dedicated leader…
Teach him for every enemy there is a friend,

Steer him away from envy,
if you can,
teach him the secret of
quiet laughter.

Let him learn early that
the bullies are the easiest to lick…
Teach him, if you can,
the wonder of books…
But also give him quiet time
to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky,
bees in the sun,
and the flowers on a green hillside.

In the school teach him
it is far honourable to fail
than to cheat…
Teach him to have faith
in his own ideas,
even if everyone tells him
they are wrong…
Teach him to be gentle
with gentle people,
and tough with the tough.

Try to give my son
the strength not to follow the crowd
when everyone is getting on the band wagon…
Teach him to listen to all men…
but teach him also to filter
all he hears on a screen of truth,
and take only the good
that comes through.

Teach him if you can,
how to laugh when he is sad…
Teach him there is no shame in tears,
Teach him to scoff at cynics
and to beware of too much sweetness…
Teach him to sell his brawn
and brain to the highest bidders
but never to put a price-tag
on his heart and soul.

Teach him to close his ears
to a howling mob
and to stand and fight
if he thinks he’s right.
Treat him gently,
but do not cuddle him,
because only the test
of fire makes fine steel.

Let him have the courage
to be impatient…
let him have the patience to be brave.
Teach him always
to have sublime faith in himself,
because then he will have
sublime faith in mankind.

This is a big order,
but see what you can do…
He is such a fine little fellow,
my son!

With a 2-year-old son and my extended family consisting of students ranging from 4th till 12th grade, I have been looking for poems/quotes/writings etc that are inspiring and give insights to me as a parent and a teacher. And I must say I love this piece, it absolutely deserves a frame and a wall, which will catch your eye every morning:)

Here is one of my favorite poems on children –

    Happy reflecting,
    Maya:)

Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,

And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts.

For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls,

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit,
    not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.

For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you
with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.

    Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;

For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that
    is stable.

    — Khalil Gibran

I am a teacher/lecturer / and a mother of two grown up girls, when I read this poem to my students I get goose pimples, very touching, very emotional, very inspiring. I had once told a teacher who had brought a complaint to me about my daughter leaving the class (the teacher was my colleague and a good friend) without her permission for some drama practice in school. I told the teacher “I have given my daughter to the teachers for 6 hours” treat her like you treat all the students, punish her for the wrong things she does and praise for the good. Till my daughter graduate I never received any complaints and on her graduation the teacher thanked me for what I had told her. and said I wish all parents could be like you.

I wish all parents read this poem. I have displayed it on our notice board in the colege

by the way, it seems that a part of the text has been missed in
    your version as follows :

    ‘it will take time, i know;
but teach him if you can,
that a dollar earned is of far more value than five found.
    Teach him to lose,
    and also to enjoy winning.’

This is no doubt a master pice. But one thing should be noted that about the source of this writing. In my investigation, i discover this pice is anonymus but taged to the great man abraham lincon inorder to gain easy and more popularity. The use of words in this inspirational pice are diffrent from the pharse used in the 1860s and diffrent from the way abraham lincon picks his words. For the this is an act known as academic tefth (playgiarisim in nuature) but no doubt it is a master pice. Which should be taged anonymus.

Its funny that we worry about the writer. It doesn’t matter who has written it. What matters is the the poem itself. The value of the poem should always be greater than the value of the poet. Only the one who has written that kind of poems (where poem is greater than poet) can be a great poet. I have had read this poem before visiting this blog.
But I should thank you for Kahlil Gibran’s piece. Let our discussions have some value..
